Mapleton History Group meeting

Message from our President

Last month, MADCA and the Montville Village Association (MVA) have jointly submitted a response to the Council's Sunshine Coast Active Transport Plan. Both our organisations emphasise the benefits of integrating active and on-demand transport options like ride-sharing, electric scooters, and bike-sharing into urban planning. We highlight the need for improved infrastructure, including pathways that connect the Blackall Range villages, to promote eco-friendly transport and enhance community connectivity. Advocating for a pathway linking Mapleton, Flaxton, Montville, and Maleny, MADCA and MVA underscore the health, social, environmental, and economic benefits of such projects, urging the Council to extend planning and funding to realise these initiatives fully.

Finally, feedback about Community Connect and our websites are welcome and should be sent to: information@madca.com.au.

Fireant eradication graphic

Fire Ants found in Aura
Fire ants, aggressive and destructive insects, have been found in the Sunshine Coast community. This is a serious threat.

If you suspect fire ants on your property, report it immediately.
There's a 24-hour reporting requirement under the Biosecurity Act. You can be fined.

A fire ant biosecurity zone is now in effect for Nirimba.
This means restrictions are in place for moving soil, mulch, plants, and other materials that could harbour fire ants.

Residents and businesses in the zone should check fire ant biosecurity zone regulations.
Following these rules is crucial to containing the infestation.

Eradicating fire ants is a shared responsibility. By reporting sightings and following movement restrictions, we may be able to protect our community and prevent these harmful insects from taking hold.

The choir is especially seeking more male singers to create a richer and more balanced sound. They offer a supportive and welcoming environment, so there's no need to audition – just come along and see if it's a good fit for you.

Rehearsals for the new season take place on Monday evenings at the Kureelpa Hall and start at 7:00pm. This is the perfect time to join and start learning their new repertoire with conductor Brian Martin.

Mapleton History Group

Mapleton History Group
On the evening of June 24th, the Mapleton Pub’s Green Room was packed for Fiona McGill's presentation on Deep Time in Australia . McGill, Chair of the Sunshine Coast Reconciliation Group and an archaeologist, provided an insightful overview of human migration from Africa to Australia. She discussed the changing climates and landscapes over millennia, ice ages, sea level fluctuations, and the presence of mega-fauna. The talk also highlighted traces of ancient encampments and early farming practices.

The audience of around sixty people engaged enthusiastically, adding their own knowledge and anecdotes. The significant turnout on a cold winter night demonstrated the community’s strong interest in Australian history and reconciliation.

The event was organised by the Mapleton History Group, which regularly hosts discussions to promote truth-telling about Australia’s past. Gratitude was expressed to the Mapleton Public House for its generous support of the event.

Quarry Petition
Our community faces a decision about the future of the Dulong and Image Flat Quarries. Sunshine Coast Regional Council is considering selling them to a private company through an "Expression of Interest" process. This raises concerns.

Firstly, Council-owned quarries currently have an unfair advantage. They face less development scrutiny compared with private ones. The terms of this sale could exacerbate this imbalance. Secondly, public control over quarry operations would be lost, potentially prioritising profits over our environment. Finally, residents already have limited rights regarding these quarries, and selling them off would further restrict our ability to influence decisions.

A petition is circulating to address these issues. It urges the Council to: stop the sale, retain control of the quarries, and create a fair zoning system for all quarries in the region. This would ensure a level playing field and better protect our environment. Sign the petition to make your voice heard!
