Message from our President

New Year greetings and best wishes for 2025. Thank you for your support in 2024 which saw MADCA engage in several community issues with the aim of making our community a better place to live in. A great Christmas present for the community was the success of the Hinterland Quarry Action Group, which has been under the auspices of MADCA, in persuading the Sunshine Coast Council to retain ownership of the Dulong and Image Flat Quarries. This shows what a dedicated team with broad community support can achieve.

A major issue in 2025 is that the Council is expected to undertake a compulsory consultation with the community about the new regional plan. It is expected that significant changes are likely in the local area plan for Mapleton, Montville and surrounding areas. MADCA has already advocated strongly for the retention of the planning requirements that protect the iconic character of our region. We will continue to do so in 2025.

Finally, feedback about Community Connect and our websites are welcome and should be sent to: information@madca.com.au.

Max Standage, MADCA President

Happy New Year
The Range community has entered 2025 revitalised, no doubt aided by the heavy rainfall over the New Year period. Engaging in shared interests is a proven way to find your niche, build friendships, and enhance overall well-being.

The Mahjong and the Mapleton Craft Groups have resumed their weekly meetings on Wednesdays at the Bowls Club. Tennis sessions have recommenced in Mapleton and Montville, bushwalkers are back on the trails, and the Mapleton Movers are once again on the move. The Kureelpa and Surrounds Community Crop Swap Group will reconvene on February 3rd, while the Mapleton group will meet on January 17th. Croquet and Scrabble, both played in Nambour, attract numerous local community members, as do Probus, Lions, and Zonta.

The MADCA noticeboard at the Mapleton Post Office provides additional news and information, supplementing our website, Facebook pages, and the Community Website.

HQAG Celebrates Council's Decision to End EOI Process
The Hinterland Quarry Action Group (HQAG) has announced a major victory for the Sunshine Coast hinterland. Sunshine Coast Council has officially ended the Expression of Interest (EOI) process for its Image Flat and Dulong Quarries. This decision follows two years of sustained community advocacy against plans to privatise quarry operations.

Council will now retain control over these public assets. The HQAG expressed gratitude to the community, supporting groups, Cr David Law, and the Council leadership for their contributions to this success.

While celebrating this victory, the HQAG emphasises the importance of continued community engagement. The upcoming Planning Scheme review in 2025 will provide an opportunity to address remaining concerns and ensure a sustainable future for the region.

A koala sitting on a road

Koalas on the Move.
The Sunshine Coasts koalas are on the move! During spring and summer, these iconic marsupials are more active as they seek mates and establish new territories. Young koalas are also venturing out from their mothers to find homes of their own.

Koalas are most active between dusk and dawn. This increased movement means a high chance of encounters with vehicles and dogs.

  • Drive with caution, especially at dusk and dawn.
  • Be extra vigilant in areas with koala crossing signs.
  • If you see a sick or injured koala, call 1300 ANIMAL (1300 264 625).

Koalas in Queensland are officially classified as endangered under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act.

Dark Sky graphic

Light Pollution and the Dark Sky Initiative
Light pollution, the excessive use of artificial light, threatens the Blackall Range. This glow disrupts the natural darkness, hindering astronomy and harming wildlife. From disoriented gliders to confused sea turtles, animals rely on darkness for navigation and survival. Light pollution can also disrupt their breeding cycles and hormone production.

Thankfully, simple solutions like using shielded lights and reducing blue light emissions can help. By working together, we can preserve the night sky for both science and the environment.

Crypto Concerns: Summer Swimming Safety
Queensland Health warns of a rise in cryptosporidiosis, a gastrointestinal illness, as warmer weather brings more people to pools. Caused by a parasite, it spreads through contaminated water, food, or contact with infected individuals or animals. Diarrhoea is a common symptom.

As of 18 December 2024, Queensland Health has recorded 6,103 cryptosporidiosis notifications across the state since 2023. This compares to 1,314 cases in 2023.

To prevent spreading the illness, avoid swimming for two weeks after experiencing any diarrhoea. Thorough handwashing after using the bathroom, changing diapers, or handling animals is crucial. Stay hydrated and consult a healthcare professional for severe symptoms.
